ON THIS DAY 66 YEARS AGO (1951)

Our front page reported on the wave of euphoria sweeping through London in celebratio­n of the opening of the Festival of Britain by King George VI. The festival was intended to give the country a boost following the devastatio­n of the Second World War. There were also celebratio­ns in Glasgow, Cardiff and Stratford-uponavon, and exhibition­s toured the country.

17 YEARS AGO (200)

Former Labour MP Ken Livingston­e was voted in as Mayor of London with 40% of the vote. Livingston­e, leader of the GLC before it was abolished in 1986, ran as an independen­t when he failed to secure the nomination as Labour’s official candidate.

91 YEARS AGO (1926)

Some 1.2 million workers took part in the General Strike in support of miners who had suffered wage cuts and worsening working conditions. It lasted 10 days but failed when the Tory government used troops to run services.

BIRTHDAYS

Golfer Rory Mcilroy, a Manchester Utd fan, is 28. TV presenter Laura Whitmore is 32. She has a journalism degree. Musician Jackie Jackson, whose real name is Sigmund Esco Jackson, is 66. And many happy returns to Mirror readers Kay Snowden from York, who turns 91, and Rainbow Dyall from Heybridge, Essex, 30, today.
