A historic power-sharing government was formed in Northern Ireland with Ian Paisley from the Democratic Unionist Party as First Minister and Sinn Fein’s Martin Mcguinness as Deputy First Minister.

33 YEARS AGO (1984)

The USSR announced it was pulling out of the US Olympics in Los Angeles, accusing the Americans of using the games to stir up anti-soviet propoganda and of putting the security of their athletes at risk.

72 YEARS AGO (1945)

Our front page announced VE Day in Europe and two days of public holidays for the weary British public who had “endured five years, eight months and four days of war”. The fighting had ended the previous day when General Alfred Jodl signed Germany’s unconditio­nal surrender in Reims, France.
