TIGERS PROBE INTO CHASE BAR BUST-UP
Brilliant but controversial Rangi back in the dock after an altercation at Featherstone
Castleford v St Helens Kick-off 2.30pm
CASTLEFORD star Rangi Chase is out of today’s Challenge Cup clash with St Helens amid a club investigation – and could have his Tigers future decided on Monday. The Tigers are looking into reports that Chase, a former Man of Steel and England international, was involved in an incident at the Featherstone versus Halifax cup game on Thursday night. Those reports suggest that the 30-year-old was involved in an altercation with another man in the bar at half-time that saw both ejected from the ground. The Tigers yesterday issued a statement that read: “Castleford Tigers are aware of an incident that occurred last night in Featherstone. The club is investigating the incident and will make no further comment at this time.” Mirror Sport understands the club will meet Chase and his representative on Monday to establish what happened and determine his future at the Mend-a-hose Jungle. It is the second off-field matter Chase has been involved in this year. He was dropped by the Tigers for a game against Leeds at the start of March over an internal investigation into an alleged altercation in a town centre. He later returned to Daryl Powell’s side and started the game against Huddersfield nine days ago, although he sustained a neck injury in the first half. Chase’s career has been characterised by a combination of highlights and controversy. He won the 2011 Man of Steel following a brilliant campaign with the Tigers, but earlier that year was handed a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to a GBH charge in Australia. After switching his allegiances from his native New Zealand he made his England debut that autumn, qualifying under the residency rule. He featured eight times for England and played in the 2013 World Cup, but was dropped on the eve of the semi-final against the Kiwis. Chase joined Salford for the 2014 campaign and produced a number of dazzling displays, including setting up a miracle try for Josh Griffin against Hull that went viral online in 2015. He signed for Leigh, but featured just five times before parting company with them due to mental health issues he outlined in an interview with Mirror Sport. After three months out of the game he rejoined Castleford in July last year, and had played his part in the Tigers climbing to the top of Super League this season. But the club must now decide whether his future remains in Castleford or not.
