ON THIS DAY 74 YEARS AGO (1943)

Our front page revealed the RAF’S Dambusters raid on Germany’s industrial Ruhr valley. Photograph­s showed water pouring through the shattered dam walls. Of 133 RAF crew, 53 were killed and three captured.

67 YEARS AGO (1950)

The aims of NATO – the North Atlantic Treaty Organisati­on – were formalised at a meeting of the 12 member countries in London. The organisati­on’s main objective was to seek a diplomatic solution before the use of military force.

53 YEARS AGO (1964)

Dozens of youths were jailed after clashes between Mods and Rockers in towns on the South Coast over the Whit Weekend. In Brighton more than 1,000 teenagers were involved in fights and acts of vandalism, while in Margate there were running battles between the police and some 400 youths.

BIRTHDAYS

Musician Rick Wakeman is 68. He played keyboards on David Bowie’s Space Oddity. Ex-tennis player Yannick Noah is 57. He now has a successful music career. Singer Toyah Willcox is 59. She is married to King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp. US comedian Tina Fey is 47. She was the first female head writer on legendary US comedy show Saturday Night Live. And many happy returns to Mirror reader Colin Moore from Newcastle upon Tyne, who turns 76 today.
