44 YEARS AGO (1973)

The Navy sent ships to protect trawlers from Icelandic patrol boats after Iceland extended its fishing zone. It was part of the 1970s’ “cod wars” which saw clashes over fishing rights.

90 YEARS AGO (1927)

Charles Lindbergh set off from Roosevelt Field in Long Island on the world’s first non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic. After 33-and-a-half hours he landed at Le Bourget airport in Paris, where he was greeted by 150,000 fans.
