Angry Ag is feeling Lov sick

- BY DAVID MADDOCK

STEVE AGNEW insisted Liverpool’s Euro party should never have got started. The Middlesbrough manager watched at the end as Anfield celebrated a top-four finish with a threegoal demolition of his relegated team. Yet with the scores level in the first half – and anxiety creeping around the ground – Dejan Lovren appeared to pull back Patrick Bamford in the box (above). Referee Martin Atkinson waved away appeals but Agnew insisted it was a penalty, which would have meant an automatic red card for the Liverpool defender. “It is moments like that as a counter-attacking team when you break and I thought it was a definite penalty,” Agnew said. That let-off was amplified when the home side took a dramatic lead on the stroke of half time, which turned the game and condemned Boro to their 20th defeat of the season. The dismal end to a terrible campaign has left doubts about Agnew’s future, even though he took over long after the North East club were rooted in the relegation zone. And asked about whether he hoped to stay on at the Riverside, Agnew (right) revealed talks are scheduled with owner Steve Gibson. “Whether it is this week or next week... I don’t know any dates but I am sure we will talk,” he added. “It is Middlesbrough FC that we have to get right in the summer months and make sure we are all prepared for a tough campaign in the Championship. “The spirit is dented at the moment but will return to help get the club back up.”
