Jonny’s Bullitt hitting the spot

TASTEMAKER DJ TRANSFORMS BEER GARDEN INTO SOMETHING SPECIAL

-

We stumbled upon the Bullitt Hotel’s beer garden area recently and the music accompanying the hazy evening sunshine was a total joy to behold. Not your standard fare by any means but, quite bravely, given its city centre hotel location and home, rather leftfield, a little bit weird, wonderful and totally, completely muso.

It came as no surprise to find the architect of the soundtrack most weekends is none other than Jonny Carberry, one of the Belfast music scene’s best kept secrets.

Jonny has been a resident or guest at every club night worth their salt, and even a short time in his company will illustrate why. Mindblowingly knowledgeable and infectious, Jonny is an avid music collector with an ear for far-flung oddities and sounds rooted in disco and he has been charged with bringing his impeccable taste to the Bullitt’s weekend sounds.

“We’ve had a few events there now,” he told us this week. “Black Bones, Group Zero, and Morgan Buckley from Dublin’s Wah Wah Wino crew/ Rush Hour have all been incredible guests and this coming weekend we’re hyped to present NTS original Jon Rust in the open air Bullitt Courtyard.

“Jon is a real DJ’S DJ. Often handpicked by many tastemakers to feature alongside them, Jon has a reputation as a fiercely diverse selector with the skills, experience and confidence to translate his evolving tastes to the dance floor.”

A born and bred Londoner, Jon learned the ropes working at the legendary Plastic People, Rinse FM and Tempa – also running parties as

Standard Place (alongside Oneman and Reecha) and was one of the first crew of DJS asked to take part and perform on Boiler Room.

Since then, as a resident at NTS radio (Rust has been broadcasting on the station since the station’s first week on air), Jon has won fans around the globe.

Now Rust is turning heads with his own imprint, Levels, through which he has released music from the likes of Lord Tusk and Ajukaja & Andrevski, winning him the support of tastemakers as diverse as Ron Morelli, Benji B and Jamie XX, (who he supported on his European “Colours” Tour in 2015).

Joining Jon on the night will be adventurous local selectors The Two Jamies and Jonny himself, all playing across that weird disco/new wave/ synth/boogie/house sound as well as the finest worldwide sounds.
