Kids warned on danger of playing near train tracks

- BY SHEENA MCSTRAVICK

CHILDREN have been alerted over the risks of playing near rail lines after a number of incidents. Police said they have received several calls in recent weeks about the behaviour of young people in West Belfast. Officers were joined by the District Policing and Community Safety Partnership, City Council and Translink NI Railways in an appeal to parents. Chief Insp Kellie Mcmillan said: “The majority of young people out enjoying themselves and meeting up with friends over the weekends are well-behaved. “However, the behaviour of some is having a huge impact on the community – whether through excessive noise, drinking alcohol, lighting fires, causing damage to property or throwing stones at police. “More worryingly, together with Translink and council staff, police have had to move groups of young people away from the railway lines close to Dunmurry Rail Station. “With trains passing regularly at high speed, it’s difficult to think of a more dangerous place for young people to gather.”
