THE URGENT NEED TO CATCH LETHAL PROSTATE CANCERS EARLY
TRAGICALLY, 11,000 fathers, sons, husbands and brothers lose their lives to prostate cancer every year in the
UK. If we’re going to stop this, there’s one breakthrough that is the most vital of all. We need to find a way to diagnose lethal prostate cancers earlier.
At the moment we can’t accurately tell the difference between prostate cancers that will go on to kill and those that may never cause any harm.
This means that every year many men may receive treatments and suffer life-changing side effects unnecessarily, while other men with lethal prostate cancer are not diagnosed in time. That must change. Over the next five years, we want to get to a stage where every man can go to his doctor when he reaches the age of 50 to receive a simple risk assessment. It could confidently tell him whether or not he is likely to be diagnosed with a dangerous form of prostate cancer, and what he needs to do about it. Prostate Cancer UK is currently working with an international team of researchers to develop a tool that will do just that so more dangerous cancers are picked up early and treated before it’s too late.
