WORKER CRUSHED TO DEATH BY ROAD ROLLER
PSNI launch probe after man killed in horror machinery accident
A PROBE was launched yesterday after a road worker was killed when he was crushed by a roller. It is understood the man, in his 30s, died when he became trapped by machinery in South Armagh. The PSNI and the Health and Safety Executive are investigating the incident outside Mullaghbawn, near Forkhill, where resurfacing work was carried out. Last night there were reports the victim was Polish. Local SDLP MLA Justin Mcnulty said it was a “deeply shocking incident”. He added: “Such a tragedy, a young man going about his day’s work and to die in such a tragic way. My thoughts and
prayers are with his wife and family back home in Poland. “My thoughts are also with his work colleagues and those from the local community and the emergency services who attended the scene.” Work colleagues were said to look shocked as they left the Bog Road. Mickey Larkin, a Sinn Fein councillor in the area, said it was a “distressing” incident. He added: “It’s just shocking. Certainly people in the area are deeply shocked by what’s happened. “Obviously I would like to offer condolences to this man’s family. I would also pay tribute to the emergency services who had to deal with what must have been a very distressing incident.” South Armagh Ulster Unionistcouncillor David Taylor also expressed his sympathies. He said: “I am very sorry to hear of the tragic circumstances surrounding this incident and my thoughts and prayers are with the gentleman’s family at this extremely difficult time.” Police last night confirmed they “are liaising with the NI Health and Safety Executive”. A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesman said they attended the incident but did not take anyone from the scene. The road is understood to be regularly used by children walking to and from a local school. The school was informed and alternative arrangements have been put in place.
