A MAN killed in a city centre stabbing is understood to have been a Syrian refugee.
Hazem Ahmed Ghreir, who was in his 30s, died after an assault off Belfast’s Great Victoria Street on Sunday night. An 18-year-old man remains in police custody. Detectives said they “do not believe race was an issue” and they are not treating it as a hate crime. SDLP Westminster candidate for North Belfast Martin Mcauley appealed to anyone with any information about the attack to come forward to police. He added: “This was an horrific crime carried out close to a major road in the middle of our city.” Alliance Westminster candidate for South Belfast Paula Bradshaw also hit out at the “shocking” assault. She said: “I offer my sincere condolences to the loved ones of the man who died last night. “Violence has no place in our society and I would urge anyone who was in the area to contact the police with information immediately.” The Northern Ireland Ambulance service was called to the scene at 10.45pm. A spokesman added they performed CPR in an attempt to resuscitate the victim. They sent a rapid response vehicle and two A&E crews before the patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital. Det Insp Darren Mccartney said: “We are continuing to investigate the murder of Hazem and we would appeal to anyone who was in the Downshire Place vicinity of Great Victoria Street at around 10.45pm [on Sunday] to contact police. I would also ask anyone who has any footage captured from the incident to get in touch. “At this stage of the investigation we do not believe race was an issue and we are not treating this matter as a hate crime. “An 18-year-old male who we arrested last night is currently in custody at Musgrave PSNI station and is assisting police with their enquiries.” Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives on 101 or to remain anonymous phone Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. irish@mgn.co.uk
