Our revealing front page showed Fergie and her daughters looking on as the Queen’s carriage swept by on its way to Royal Ascot. We told how the Duchess of York, once a guest in the Royal Box, had been told not to attend the race after her split from Prince Andrew.

56 YEARS AGO (1961)

Soviet ballet star Rudolf Nureyev, principal dancer of the Leningrad Kirov Ballet, defected to the West after shaking off his guards at a Paris airport. He became principal dancer at the Royal Ballet.

43 YEARS AGO (1974)

The IRA bombed the Houses of Parliament, injuring 11 people and rupturing a gas main causing fire to spread rapidly through the palace. The police had managed to clear most of the building after the Press Associatio­n received a telephone warning from a man with an Irish accent six minutes before the device exploded.
