Our front page picture shows the aftermath of a Trident plane crashing into a field in Staines, Surrey, killing all 118 people on board. It emerged the captain of the flight from Heathrow to Brussels, Stanley Key, had a heart condition.
42 YEARS AGO (1975)
An inquest jury declared Lord Lucan was guilty of murdering nanny Sandra Rivett, 29, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He vanished and was officially declared dead in 1999.
39 YEARS AGO (1978)
Mirror columnist Ian Botham became the first cricketer in the game’s history to score a century and take eight wickets in the same innings, during the Test match against Pakistan. Botham, possibly England’s greatest all-rounder, played 102 Test matches for his country. He was knighted in 2007.
