Child finds gun & ammo
Appeal after shock discovery in street
A COMMUNITY is in shock after a child found a gun and ammunition while playing in the street. The youngster, understood to be of primary school age, made the discovery in the Rathgill area of Bangor, Co Down, on Sunday evening. Police were alerted and the revolvertype weapon and ammunition were taken away for further examination. DUP councillor Wesley Irvine said: “It is a reckless action, to have a weapon like that lying where children play. “It could have been a lot more serious, particularly with families being close by. “It put the safety of residents at risk so if anyone has any information they should contact the PSNI or if they saw anyone throw anything in the bush to help police with inquiries.” Independent councillor Noelle Robinson added: “It is very concerning indeed and I will be making contact with our good relations department and the police. “The community is very concerned with what has happened.” The discovery comes after police were called to nearby Fort Terrace on Sunday morning after reports of an incident. Police recovered a machete after a man allegedly attempted to enter another resident’s house. It is understood there have been increased problems with anti-social behaviour in the area where new homes have been built. Members of the Rathgill community are becoming increasingly concerned following recent events. Karen Worrall, community development officer at Rathgill Community Association, said a public meeting will be held next week in response to concerns about safety and increased antisocial behaviour. She said: “At 2.30am my phone started ringing with calls from concerned residents. “We believe residents should feel safe in their homes, it’s just awful. “It has been ongoing and there is fear in the community. I live and work here and we have a great community spirit in the area but something needs to be done.” The Rathgill Community Association public meeting will take place at 3pm next Tuesday in the George Green Community Centre. The PSNI, councillors, safety wardens, NIHE, housing associations and council staff will also be invited to attend. Police appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
