KUNDAI IN, ARMSTRONG NEXT

- BY EUAN MCLEAN

BRENDAN RODGERS is ready to reopen contract talks with Stuart Armstrong, left, as Celtic confirmed the signing of midfield prospect Kundai Benyu on a fouryear deal. Armstrong’s contract is up at the end of the season but discussions over an extension were put on hold as the Hoops focused on wrapping up the Treble last term. The Parkhead men are back down to business at their pre-season camp in Austria – and Rodgers is looking to get Armstrong’s future sorted. Rodgers, who made his second summer signing with the capture of highly-rated Benyu from Ipswich, said: “I wanted to put talks on the back burner towards the end of last season. I didn’t want distractions and there was a period when it wasn’t resolved. “The last thing Stuart needed to worry about was talks. “Stuart had a brilliant year. Contracts are always about length of time or finances but I’m confident the club and the agent will come to an agreement. “He’s happy here. So let’s wait and see.” Rodgers says he is happy with his squad but wants to add one more ahead of the Champions League qualifiers in a fortnight. The Hoops boss also hasn’t ruled out a return for Kolo Toure – whom he’d love to bring back in a coaching role. The defender, 35, hasn’t travelled to Austria as he is in the Ivory Coast considering his future. But Rodgers said: “Kolo is still in that mindset, ‘Do I want to play?’ He’s now 35 but was fantastic for us. His deal has run out, though he is someone I would like to have a role for. “He needs time to see where he’s at, in terms of playing or whether he falls into the coaching role more.” Meanwhile Kundai said: “I’m delighted. It’s a massive honour to sign for one of the world’s great clubs.”
