People live in a bubble.. totally unaware of the peril they’re in

- BY KIM CHUNG-SEONG NORTH KOREA DEFECTOR AND FORMER SINGER FOR KIM JONG-IL

AS a child in North Korea, you’re told the country is the best on the planet and nothing else compares. We are told America is evil and neighbours in the South live an impoverished life, deprived of food and basic living conditions. The people of my homeland know nothing outside our borders. Very few realise the brutal dictatorships of Kim Jong-un and his predecessors Kim Jong-il and Kim Il-sung have engineered a system void of any freedoms whatsoever. They think it is completely normal. Leaders have ensured they are the only source of information in the country which leaves my people oblivious as to what happens outside elsewhere in the world. As a result, no one in the country has freedom of thought or belief. It is suppressed to ensure compliance. There is no freedom of the press, no freedom of movement and no freedom of speech. Those who are brave enough obtain Chinese sim cards to talk to people outside the country on secret mobile phones. It is the only way to be free of censorship. Those found to have them though face execution. As a result, my brothers and sisters live in a bubble unaware of troubles my homeland faces. They, like the family I was forced to leave, will be clueless that they could be on the brink of war with America because of Kim’s nuclear ambitions. The only indication people will have is an increase in propaganda. But most don’t even realise that is just what it is.
