52 YEARS AGO (1965)

Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs, serving 30 years, escaped from Wandsworth jail with a ladder thrown from the outside. He would return to the UK from Brazil in 2001.

18 YEARS AGO (1999)

The third novel in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, was published. The book sold 68,000 copies in the first three days and has gone on to sell more than three million in Britain. Author JK Rowling said she found the story easy to write and completed it within a year.
