Neth aiming to be a King of the track

NETHANEEL MITCHELL-BLAKE heads home to East London tomorrow, but admits his World Championship ambitions were forged in Jamaica.

The sprinter was born in Newham, home to the London Stadium where he is due to run in the 200m at the Muller Anniversary Games.

Mitchell-blake (above) left England with his parents when he was a teen and attended the athletics-mad Jamaica College in Kingston, taking part in inter-school championships in front of thousands of fans.

The 23-year-old said: “They take it very seriously there and I realised that if I wanted a career in the sport I would have to step my game up.

“I raced in Jamaica from 13 to 18. It might break some people, but it might make some people. It is beautiful to run in front of 30,000-plus people.

“It helped my character-building and mental toughness.”

Incredibly, Mitchell-blake had not run in England for 10 years until last weekend’s World Championship Trials in Birmingham. He won the 200m in 20.18 seconds smashing the meeting’s 30-year record, held by John Regis.

And tomorrow he gets his first taste of London Stadium where next month’s global champs will be held.

He added: “Hopefully, I will get to the final and win a medal.”

Mo Farah is the star turn in the 3,000m as he makes a penultimate stadium appearance before switching to road-running.
