PASTURES NEW FOR INTERNATIONAL DUO

Christie & Walters move on

- BY PAUL O’HEHIR

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND pair Jon Walters and Cyrus Christie joined new clubs last night.

Walters left Stoke to sign for Burnley on a two-year deal for a fee of £2 million that could rise to £3 million with add-ons.

And former Derby County man Christie has been snapped up by Championship rivals Middlesbrough for a fee of £2.4 million.

The powerhouse striker (below) will have Ireland colleagues Robbie Brady, Jeff Hendrick, Stephen Ward and Keith Long for company at Turf Moor.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough boss Garry Monk is thrilled to have landed Christie who wasn’t in Gary Rowett’s plans at Derby.

Relegated from the Premier League last season, Boro also bagged Jonny Howson from Norwich yesterday.

Christie had a year to run on his Derby deal but Monk said: “Cyrus is a really good addition in an area where we are lacking.

“It’s time for these guys to come in and push as hard as the other players have done already to be prepared for the season ahead.”

Christie said: “I’m delighted to sign for Middlesbrough. It’s a fantastic club with a passionate support and history.

“I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead. I can’t wait to get started and to play for a brilliant manager and alongside some really good players.

“I’d like to thank the chairman, all staff, players and fans of Derby County for the last three years which was full of ups and downs,” he added.

“I’ve hard work ahead to keep improving and developing but I can’t wait to pull on the red and white shirt of Boro.”
