Let’s Revel in Craig’s Oz family

- Ianhyland

Once I’d recovered from the initial shock of Danny Dyer’s royal revelation on Who Do You Think You Are? last year, a nagging question crept into my head.

How would the BBC’S long-running family tree show ever top uncovering the news that the cockney geezer is a direct descendant of Edward III?

And a note to spoilsports eager to point out thousands of people are related to royalty if you go back far enough: Don’t bother – I’ll ignore you.

The truth is Dyer’s investiture will always be the show’s crowning glory. But I’m glad BBC1 hasn’t given up trying. I just wish this new series didn’t clash with Killer Women. I don’t need Thursday night viewing dilemmas. Mind you, there were plenty of killer women – not literally – on show in Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood’s family last night.

His mum Bev and sister Sue were both fabulous, especially Sue who could only have been more brilliantly Australian if she’d slapped his arm and said, “You’re terrible, Muriel.”

They were subsequently outdone by his incredibly sprightly grandma Phyllis, who welcomed Craig into her home and promptly had him read out the 100th birthday letter she’d just received from the Queen.

There was more evidence that this love of being centre stage was in the genes as Craig discovered Phyllis’s grandfather Harry was a celebrated clog dancer in the late 1800s.

And when I say celebrated I mean he was the Champion of Australasia in 1871. Stick that in your cherry ripe and smoke it, Dyer.
