Our front page told the shocking story of triple murderer Michael Bassett, an ex-grammar school pupil who shot dead three French tourists before committing suicide. Police found Bassett’s body in his Ford Escort in Barlaston, Staffs.

22 YEARS AGO (1995)

Some 40,000 Muslim refugees fled the city of Srebrenica in Bosnia after being forced out by Bosnian Serbs in what the UN described as the biggest ‘ethnic cleansing” since the Second World War.

20 YEARS AGO (1997)

Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace was gunned down outside his Miami mansion. Ten days later police traced the killer, Andrew Cunanan, to a houseboat and, following a five-hour stand off, found him dead after he shot himself.
