Tree tribute for soldier killed in WW1
Celebrities and U2
A WREATH placed on the grave of a First World War soldier was made from a tree he sent home from the front 100 years ago.
David Mccabe died in the Battle of Passchendaele, one of the war’s bloodiest encounters.
He sent “a small parcel of trees” back to Scotland, which his father planted.
One tree still survives on the Abercairny Estate near Crieff, in Perthshire.
Mccabe’s great-nephew James, 70, of Crieff, was looking at memorabilia when he found the story.
“He was wounded in France in 1915 and that is when he sent the saplings.
“It is amazing one of the trees is still going strong.”
Crieff, which lost 160 people at Passchendaele, will hold a parade next Sunday for its anniversary. SHANE Macgowan and Robbie Keane were among the famous faces at U2’s celeb-filled Croke Park afterparty.
Music legends, A-listers and well-known Irish faces joined the band for a knees-up to celebrate their triumphant sold-out gig at GAA HQ on Saturday night.
Bono’s wife Ali Hewson was spotted making her way to the party at Dublin’s favourite new restaurant Roberta’s following The Joshua Tree 2017 show.
Bill Clinton’s daughter Chelsea and her husband Marc Mezvinsky were both snapped at the fancy bash. Broadcaster Pat Kenny and his wife Cathy and fashion designer father and daughter John and Simone Rocha were also pictured at the post-gig party.
Oscar-winning singer songwriter Glen Hansard, Jim Sheridan, Keith Duffy and U2’s long-time pal Guggi also joined the band for aftershow drinks.
