Medics failed to spot rare bug in mum
A YOUNG mum died of a rare flesh-eating infection after doctors failed to spot it, an inquest has heard.
Katie Widdowson, 23, had gone to hospital with an injured wrist after being tied up in a sex game.
But doctors diagnosed a sprain and sent the carer home. She died two days later, on January 3.
Birmingham assistant coroner Emma Brown said she should have stayed in hospital for observations, adding: “It’s clear her death would’ve been avoidable.
“Katie’s death was due to necrotising fasciitis contributed to by neglect.”
Fiance Dean Smith, 25, last night said Good Hope Hospital, Sutton Coldfield, had been “busy and understaffed”. Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust will release a statement today.
