New advice on antibiotics ‘should be to stop when you feel better’
PATIENTS are at risk by being forced to complete courses of antibiotics, medics claim.
The notion that a shorter treatment could be inferior is not backed up by research, they say.
And long-standing global advice ignores the fact patients react to courses differently, insist Brighton and Sussex Medical School’s NHS- respected experts. Prof Martin Llewelyn said: “We make indication-specific recommendations for antibiotic duration that are based on poor evidence.”
He added: “This is changing in hospitals where biomarkers of treatment response can guide when to stop antibiotics.
