Don’t keep taking the tablets

New advice on antibiotic­s ‘should be to stop when you feel better’

PATIENTS are at risk by being forced to complete courses of antibiotic­s, medics claim.

The notion that a shorter treatment could be inferior is not backed up by research, they say.

And long-standing global advice ignores the fact patients react to courses differentl­y, insist Brighton and Sussex Medical School’s NHS- respected experts. Prof Martin Llewelyn said: “We make indication-specific recommenda­tions for antibiotic duration that are based on poor evidence.”

He added: “This is changing in hospitals where biomarkers of treatment response can guide when to stop antibiotic­s.
