TOP OF THE LAKE: CHINA GIRL

-

DETECTIVE Robin Griffin has left her fiancé at the altar, she’s drinking too much and she howls in her sleep. So not doing that well then.

Robin (Elisabeth Moss, who is also absolutely knocking it out the park in The Handmaid’s Tale) returns for this second series of the crime thriller. She’s traumatised by her past – she was gang-raped as a teenager and the baby she had was given up for adoption. And now, five years after we last saw her, she’s come to Sydney to find her long-lost daughter. Hopefully the search won’t need a detective team (or Davina Mccall).

Meanwhile, we get to see her daughter Mary (Alice Englert), a 17-year-old with problems of her own. Not least of all her adoptive mother – Nicole Kidman. Yes, the woman with the mad, frizzy hair is Nicole, taking another foray into television after Big Little Lies.

She plays Mary’s mum Julia, who has left her husband for a woman – who just happens to be one of Mary’s teachers. No wonder Mary feels a tad awkward around them.

And Julia is furious because Mary has shacked up with creepy older man Puss (David Dencik). And with a name like that, the shocking revelations about him will not surprise you.

But this is a crime drama, and there is of course a gripping murder at the heart of this series.

When a suitcase containing the body of a young woman washes up on Bondi beach, Robin and her new partner Miranda (Gwendoline Christie) begin an investigation which will lead them into the dark side of Sydney’s sex industry.
