SSE ARENA, BELFAST IT’S JUST MONEY FOR OLD ROPE

Mexican swears he’ll cash in by making Jackal feel his age on Saturday night

- BY DARREN FULLERTON

ANDRES GUTIERREZ says he will make Carl Frampton creak like an ageing fighter in Saturday’s title eliminator in Belfast.

The 24-year-old Mexican, who is six years younger than The Jackal, is a 10/1 outsider to cause a shock at the SSE Arena.

Gutierrez has racked up an incredible 37 fights since making his pro debut as a teenager in 2009 (25 knockouts in a 35-1-1 record).

He knows he will be stepping up in class on Saturday night but is confident he can stop the local hero in his tracks.

“I believe age will be a factor,” he said.

“I am 24 and I have everything required to go for it. My preparation has gone well and I feel this is my time. I have the skill, guts and attitude to win this fight

“Frampton is quick and he is a strong fighter, but I have been preparing for that. I know it will be a tough fight, but I believe it will be a close fight.”

Frampton received a hero’s welcome at yesterday’s public workout at Victoria Square.

A crowd of almost

10,000 is expected at the SSE Arena as the Tigers Bay man fights in

Belfast for the first time in two and half years.

Gutierrez, operating on this side of the Atlantic for the first time, accepts he’ll be the villain of the piece for Frampton’s eagerly awaited homecoming.

He said: “I’m more than ready to be the bad guy. I am ready to take everything from the crowd.

“They can yell at me or whatever, I will be ready. I will be doing everything to ruin their night.

“I am thrilled to be fighting outside Mexico and the US for the first time and I am very confident.”

When asked about his gameplan, Gutierrez (below) said: “Movement, uppercut and fighting close, keeping it close. “I feel strong and I’m ready.” While Frampton is targeting future world title bouts with IBF world featherweight champion Lee Selby and Santa Cruz, Gutierrez knows a win on Saturday would edge him closer to a world title.

He said: “Leo Santa Cruz is the main aim for me. I want that fight.

“It would be a big fight and a very interesting contest.

“If a fight with Santa Cruz happens, I’ll be ready, but first I have to focus on Frampton.

“I saw both his fights with Santa Cruz and they were war-like contests. They were two very good fights I learned a lot from them.”
