TOM Cruise squeezes back into his famous Top Gun T-shirt as he works to get himself flight-ready for the sequel.
The Hollywood star minted the classic look of aviator shades and white top for his role as Maverick in the 1986 original.
But he looked like he had had more hot dogs than dogfights as he jogged across a field in the Home Counties before filming starts on Top Gun: Maverick, due out in Val Kilmer played Iceman, Maverick’s nemesis. His career went sky-high when he landed leading roles such as Batman and Jim Morrison in biopic The Doors. 2019. Cruise, 55, did manage to look more like the dashing fighter pilot of old as he took off later in a helicopter.
The tight-lipped actor has confirmed the sequel is being made but refused to give any details about its plot or cast.
In an interview last month he promised excitedly: “We’re going to have the same tone that we had for the first movie.
“The aviators are back. We’ll have the need for speed and big fast machines. It’s going to be a competition film, like the first Maverick’s wingman met an untimely demise in the original. Actor Anthony Edwards rose from the ashes to save lives by playing Dr Mark Greene in TV show ER. one. There’s going to be aircraft carriers and there’s going to be jets.”
Original co-stars Val Kilmer and Kelly Mcgillis – Maverick’s nemesis, Iceman, and flight instructor Charlie Blackwood – have yet to be officially confirmed for the sequel.
But asked online if he was doing it Kilmer told a fan: “Hell yes – what a hoot it will be.”
The film, about a squad of fighter pilots, sealed Cruise’s position as a screen idol. Charlie vowed never to date a student, but Maverick stole her heart. Top Gun was a career highlight for Kelly Mcgillis who focused on raising her family.
