ANGRY HAMILTON GOES RADIO GA GA

- BY BYRON YOUNG

FIVE days before his home Grand Prix at Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton decided he needed a two-day beach break in Mykonos.

After a day of frustration in Hungary, he may need a much longer holiday in the sun as F1 headed into its month-long mid-season break on the back of a first Ferrari one-two at the Hungaroring for 13 years.

Hamilton (left) vented his feelings over the airwaves after his race strategy was compromised by radio problems, meaning he could not communicate properly with his pit wall for a large portion of the 70 laps of this tight, twisting track.

Britain’s three-time world champion was convinced his car’s performance was improving as the race progressed and that he could challenge eventual winner Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, the Ferrari pair dominating at the front.

But he couldn’t get past his own Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, and his broken radio meant he could not discuss his tyre wear and his feelings on performance and strategy with the team.

When they finally fixed the problem – which was also affecting Bottas’s car – Hamilton screamed: “I have a lot of pace – let me use it. This radio stuff sucks! My last tyres were perfect, I could have kept going.”

With his radio working again, the team ordered Bottas to allow Hamilton to pass him to have a go at the leaders on the understanding that if he could not get in front, Hamilton would allow Bottas back ahead of him .

Hamilton said: “Once I got by I gave everything until I got stuck behind a backmarker and on some dirt.”
