4 lives saved on 4 different occasions...& all by this man

...who modestly says ‘I’m no hero’

- BY MARTIN FRICKER

HUMBLE Gareth Clark may not see himself as a hero but there are four people who certainly do.

He saved their lives after chancing upon their separate plights – even risking his own. Gareth, 36, has stopped a suicidal woman leaping to her death, revived a heart attack victim and pulled two drowning people from a river. He said: “I’m just in the right place at the right time, or maybe the wrong place at the right time. I don’t see myself as a hero.”

But the police and his friends disagree. Pal Matt Blackburn said: “It’s not every day a man saves a life, let alone four.”

Gareth, of Chesterfield, Derbys, first saved a motorist at a Matlock service station in 2014.

He said: “He said he feared he was having a heart attack. Next thing I know he’s taken a turn for the worse. I had to do CPR until the paramedics arrived.” Two years later, he saw a suicidal 20-year-old ready to leap from a flyover in the town. Gareth, a facilities manager and parttime pub bouncer, said: “I grabbed her in a bear hug and pulled her over the railings.” The woman’s mum later said: “I’d like to thank him from the bottom of my heart. He’s a real hero.” And this year, Gareth has twice plunged into the freezing River Derwent in Matlock to rescue people. His most recent drama came on Saturday – while he celebrated his birthday. Gareth said he scrambled down a 30ft bank in the dark, adding: “I remember thinking I was going to die if I ended up in the water and this was not how I thought I would be spending my birthday.” Gareth has been praised as a “walking angel” by one Facebook user.

But he adds: “I’m hoping that’s my lot and I won’t come across any scary situations in the future.”
