OUR front page reported that Moors murderer Ian Brady had confessed to five more killings. He claimed he shot two victims, dumped a woman’s body in a canal and buried another body on Saddlewort­h Moor.

55 YEARS AGO (1962)

MARILYN Monroe is found dead naked in bed in LA, aged 36. There was an empty bottle of sleeping pills next to her body. An inquest ruled the death was “probable suicide”.

42 YEARS AGO (1975)

THE Forestry Commission warned that Dutch elm disease was spreading to the north of England. The epidemic was started by timber from Canada in 1968. It shrivelled leaves and branches, and could kill a mature tree in months. Over a third of southern England’s 23 million elms died in the outbreak.
