We’d have all been followers of Diana

-

THIS page isn’t usually the most serious of places, but I think it’s crucial to speak up when an important cause needs highlighting. When there are tragic consequences at stake, someone needs to take action.

And so, I can’t continue for a moment longer without drawing attention to a very real danger facing young people today: there’s a chance they don’t get how amazing Princess Diana was.

These poor unfortunates don’t remember her. They can’t answer exactly where they were when they heard she’d died, because they were either too young to know they were anywhere, or they actually weren’t anywhere, not even a twinkle in their dads’ eyes.

And so, unless we do something about it – and fast – we will have to face a reality where Diana means nothing to millennials.

The problem is that to them she probably appears to be some dry old grey person from history, like Queen Victoria or that ginger one with the neck ruff in Blackadder. What seems to be passing them by is the fact that if Diana was still around today, she would be playing them at their own game, and totally mugging them off at it.

Diana would genuinely have blown up the internet. Her Instagram prowess would be legendary, and she’d have more followers than Beyonce, one of her closest friends. She’d also hang out with the Obamas, and have once taken a selfie with Kim Kardashian to be a good sport.

Victoria Beckham would be desperate to be her friend, and always wear clothes from Diana’s high-end fashion line to suck up to her, which wouldn’t work. (Becks doesn’t get his knighthood in this imaginary alternate universe either).

Watching Diana live her life was an international obsession back in the day. Add in social media and we would have been endlessly enthralled.

It’s also essential young people understand that Diana’s story isn’t the usual boring royal stuff we have to learn at school – it’s like an (admittedly, for the most part, less aesthetically pleasing) Brad, Jen and Angelina with tiaras.

It’s absorbing, salacious and intriguing, and you can find out everything you need to about someone from their view on it. #teamdianaobv

The royal family would be much more interesting if Diana was still here, too.

As a result, there would be far fewer famous people, because there wouldn’t be time to think, read or talk about them, so the lowest level of celebrities, the really irritating ones, simply wouldn’t exist anymore.

Bliss.

No one would have noticed if Kate Middleton was there or not – never mind what she was wearing

– if Diana had been at that wedding. Afterwards, there would have been endless speculation about whether the two women got on, which would have been incredibly insulting to them both as women, and deliciously, infinitely gossip-able about.

Diana would also have been a total GILF. But, actually, millennials have very short attention spans, so they’d probably zone out long before having all of the above explained to them.

Luckily, we can get the importance of Princess Diana across to them in one simple fact of 140 characters or less.

She made Harry. The end.
