ON THIS DAY 56 YEARS AGO (1961)

COMMUNIST troops held East Berlin in a “grip of steel”, sealing the border between East and West with barbed wire to stem the flow of refugees. Days later, it was replaced with concrete blocks and the Berlin Wall came into being.

38 YEARS AGO (1979)

DOZENS of yachts vanished and 18 people, including three rescuers, were killed as a freak storm hit the Irish Sea during the Fastnet yacht race. Of 303 yachts starting, 86 finished.

37 YEARS AGO (1980)

SOME 16,000 workers at the Lenin shipyard in Gdansk, Poland, staged a successful strike following the dismissal of one of their colleagues. They also campaigned for the right to form independen­t trade unions and greater political and economic freedom.
