The International Olympic Committee barred South Africa from the Tokyo Olympics because its apartheid system separated white and black athletes.
48 YEARS AGO (1969)
Woodstock music festival fans headed home. Organisers had sold 186,000 tickets but it was estimated that nearly a million people turned up to see performances by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and The Who, despite the torrential rain and thick mud. The festival’s sponsors sustained losses of £1.8 million.
