Our front page showed a young girl who had been pulled from the rubble after an earthquake hit Izmit in western Turkey. It struck at 3am, while most victims were asleep. The death toll eventually reached 17,000.

The Internatio­nal Olympic Committee barred South Africa from the Tokyo Olympics because its apartheid system separated white and black athletes.

48 YEARS AGO (1969)

Woodstock music festival fans headed home. Organisers had sold 186,000 tickets but it was estimated that nearly a million people turned up to see performanc­es by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and The Who, despite the torrential rain and thick mud. The festival’s sponsors sustained losses of £1.8 million.
