but it must have been a frightening experience for those in the area at the time.

“There is no place for guns on the streets of our city and those behind these attacks need to end their war with the community.”

Det Const Donnell added: “I would urge anyone with any information to contact police on the non-emergency number 101.

Foyle DUP representative Gary Middleton MLA also condemned the attack.

He said: “This would have been a terrifying experience for the inhabitants.

“The reality is today we could have been mourning the loss of life.

“These actions are serious and criminal. I will continue to liaise with the police on this incident.” Detectives at Strand Road are keen to hear from anybody who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed the incident or anyone who may have heard the shots being fired or who saw anyone fleeing the area. A MAN was attacked with a bottle and cars had their windows smashed on a night of violence.

The victim remains in hospital after he was assaulted from behind on Parkend Street in the Limestone Road area of North Belfast on Saturday.

A 35-year-old woman was arrested at the scene and police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Det Sgt Stephen Gardiner said: “A 36-year-old male was assaulted with a bottle and received injuries to his head as well as a number of deep cuts to his arms and back.

“He is being treated in hospital for injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening at this time.

“We would like to hear from anyone who saw the suspect in the area at the time of the incident. He is described as being in his mid-30s, bald and wearing a blue top and grey track bottoms with blue or black stripes down the sides.

“He left the address around 8.20pm and was seen heading towards the Alexandra Park area.

“Anyone with information should contact police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 1126 of 19/8/17.

“Alternatively, details can also be passed anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“A 35-year-old woman was subsequently arrested at the scene on suspicion of assisting an offender.

“She is currently in custody, helping police with their enquiries.”

A short distance away, cars had their windows smashed by brick-throwing yobs. Windscreens were damaged as violence erupted around the Marrowbone Park.

Police had earlier said they were stepping up patrols because of reports of organised fights in the area.

One person, who ended up with glass in her eye when a brick struck her windscreen, told the Mirror: “The park was filled with kids drinking and it shouldn’t be allowed – it’s a disgrace.”

SDLP councillor for the area Paul Mccusker said: “This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.

“It needs to stop before someone gets seriously hurt.”

Police had upped their presence in the area after getting wind of social media being used to arrange a brawl.

A PSNI spokesman said: “We are monitoring social media and we are ready to deal with anything that arises.

“The advice to our young people is to stay away, don’t get involved and keep yourself safe.

“Our advice to parents is to find out what your kids are doing, where they are, who they are with, what are their plans.

“We have additional police resources in the area including evidence gatherers and anyone found breaking the law will be robustly dealt with.”
