Anguish after 22yr-old killed in horror smash

- BY RYAN SMITH

TRIBUTES have been paid to the young man who was killed in a single-car crash at the weekend.

Luke Lynch, 22, from Newtownbutler, Co Fermanagh, was travelling on the Clones Road when tragedy struck.

Two other men, who are also in their 20s and were passengers in the blue Peugeot 206, were taken to hospital after the accident at 8.45pm on Sunday.

One is in a critical condition while the other has suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Sinn Fein councillor Thomas O’reilly, who knew Mr Lynch, told the Mirror the men were widely known in the area.

He said: “It’s devastating for the families concerned. These are three very well-known families in the town. One family has lost a son and the other two are at the bedside of their sons.

“The family and the wider community is devastated waking up this morning to the news of this very, very tragic accident a mile outside the village.

“It’s certainly something that no family ever wants to go through.

“My condolences go out to the Lynch family, the wider circle and friends of Luke and hopefully the two boys make a recovery from their injuries.”

Mr O’reilly said Mr Lynch was “very much a part of the community”.

He added: “He was a very quiet young fella, always ready to help out. He always had a smile on his face, a very friendly young fella that got involved in things. “He was quiet and unassuming and did his own thing. “It’s heartbreaking for the whole community but everyone in the community will rally round and support the families involved here.”

PSNI Inspector Keir Kitt said: “We are appealing for witnesses or anyone who saw the vehicle involved travelling on the Clones Road.

“Police can be contacted at the Collision Investigation Unit by calling 101, quoting reference number 1280 20/08/17.”
