If he goes without a score over the next two Test matches his passage to Australia and the Ashes could be in jeopardy which would not only devastate the 28-yearold batsman – but his mum Margaret too. Although judging by her reaction to his impending appearance at Lord’s, Westley is not sure how she would handle it if he did indeed make the Ashes squad this winter. “I spoke to my mum on the phone last night about hopefully getting selected for the third Test of this series at Lord’s,” said Westley. “And she just started crying, she couldn’t speak back to me.

“Growing up that’s what she envisaged for me as her son: playing at Lord’s. We were talking about tickets if I was selected and she couldn’t get a word in. I think getting selected for the Ashes would be times that by 10.

“But I am focusing on the here and now though because I need to score runs. If I don’t I won’t achieve that childhood dream of playing in the Ashes.”

Westley could do with building on the promising start of a fifty in the third Investec Test against South Africa. Such is the quality of the Windies bowling, he may get just two more chances in the series if England bat only once each game, but he is confident his leg-side favouring technique can stand up to the test. “Runs are runs regardless of who they’re against,” he added. “I can take a lot of confidence from scoring runs against South Africa – not big runs, but if you can occupy the crease for that length of time, then hopefully I can do that against other attacks.

“I score consistently through the legside so that’s not something I’m too concerned about. That’s the way I play.”
