A FUGITIVE monkey who escaped from a wildlife park was recaptured yesterday.

The black and white colobus, named Cheeky Chops, made a mad dash for freedom in Co Cork three days ago

He led a rescue team a merry dance until his fun finally ended yesterday afternoon.

Fota Island Wildlife Park spokeswoman Roisin Fitzgerald said: “On Tuesday Cheeky Chops made a daring escape.

“Our escape protocol and procedures were immediately implemented and earlier today he was safely rescued.

“Cheeky Chops has now been safely reunited with the other three members of his bachelor group who welcomed him back with lots of grooming.

“At no time was Cheeky Chops in danger or a threat to any visitors or members of the public.”

After making his escape from the 100-acre wildlife park, the monkey was spotted numerous times around Cork.

He set up camp in a tree in Fota’s car park for a time on Thursday afternoon but staff were unsuccessful in coaxing him down.

The primate was finally brought home after being discovered in a nearby public toilet where it is believed he had spent the night.

Ms Fitzgerald added: “After a few hours of coaxing with his favourite treats of boiled potatoes, avocado, peanuts and bananas the rangers were able to entice him into a secure holding pen within the wildlife park grounds.

“We are constantly reviewing our policies so we can continue to improve our animal and visitors’ experiences.”
