WONDER DRUG

‘Biggest breakthrough since statins’ could also cut deaths from cancer

A NEW drug could prevent thousands of heart attacks and deaths from cancer, say medics

Canakinumab, an anti-inflammatory, may be the biggest breakthrough in treatment since statins, they say.

Cholesterol-busting statins are given to millions at risk of heart disease. But half of heart attacks occur in people who do not have high cholesterol at all.

A four-year study of 10,000 heart patients by Harvard Medical School revealed a 24% reduction in heart attacks and 17% fall in angina. Those on the highest dose saw cancer deaths fall by 51%. It is also claimed it protects against gout and arthritis.

It costs about £40,000 annually to treat a patient, via injection every three months, but costs will fall quickly if canakinumab becomes widely used.

Prof Paul Ridker, of Harvard Medical School, said he had seen three eras in tackling heart attacks. “In the first, we recognised the importance of diet, exercise and smoking cessation. In the second, we saw the tremendous value of lipid-lowering drugs such as statins.

“Now, we’re cracking the door open on the third era.”

Dr Derek Connolly, of Birmingham City Hospital, said he thought canakinumab would be used alongside statins.

Novartis, which produces the drug, is applying for a licence for the treatment for heart attack victims. AMANDA Holden enjoys one of her rasher moments – aboard a porker on a carousel.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge and actress, 46, was at The Big Feastival in the Cotswolds, hosted by Blur bassist Alex James. She joined in the fun with best pal actress Angela Griffin, plus guests including Radio 2 DJ Jo Whiley. And it looks like Amanda had a squealy good time at the annual foodie fest.
