SMYTH SIGNS OFF WITH THREE POINTS

- BY ALEX MILLS

LINFIELD boss David Healy believes little Paul Smyth can force his way into Michael O’neill’s international plans.

The 19-year-old got his dream ticket to England at the weekend after Skybet Championship side Queen’s Park Rangers agreed terms for his transfer.

Smyth signed off in style, helping the Blues maintain their 100% record with a hard-fought win over Ballymena United at Windsor Park.

Andy Mitchell upstaged the departing Smyth by grabbing the winner from the penalty spot after the midfielder was chopped down by Willie Faulkner.

United’s chances of salvaging a point disappeared when

Andrew Burns was dismissed late on following a lunging challenge on Jamie Mulgrew.

Smyth was given a great ovation at the finish as he was embraced by his manager.

“Paul’s a terrific talent and we wish him well,” said Healy. “He’s a lad that will thrive in full-time training and coaching. He’ll get bigger, stronger and quicker. I’m sure he’ll start adding more goals to his game.

“The hard work starts now for Paul. The deal is done, the clubs are happy. It’s now up to Paul. He now has to live his life as a professional footballer and I know he can do that.”

Healy is confident he’ll see in him in the green shirt of Northern Ireland further down the line.

He added: “We have been crying out for pacey, wide players in the Northern Ireland team. There has been a lot said about the lack of development of young players.

“If Paul maintains his development he can play for his country. He now needs to get games under his belt.”
