Sword terror at the palace: 2nd man is arrested
30-year-old held in London as alleged attacker is questioned
A SECOND man has been arrested after a suspected terrorist attack on police near Buckingham Palace.
The 30-year-old was seized at an address in West London as detectives probed Friday night’s thwarted sword assault.
The Metropolitan Police said the new suspect was being held on suspicion of being “involved in the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism”.
Three officers were injured when a 26-year-old man drove deliberately towards a police van on Constitution Hill at the side of the Palace grounds.
As he was being restrained by the unarmed officers, he started hitting out with a 4ft blade.
Dean Haydon, head of counter-terrorism at Scotland Yard, said: “CS gas was used as
part of the arrest and during the struggle the individual repeatedly shouted Allahu Akbar [God is great in Arabic].”
He said two officers were taken to hospital by ambulance with cuts to their hands and forearms. No members of the Royal Family were in the Palace.
A warrant to hold the alleged attacker for questioning has been extended to Friday.
Cdr Haydon urged the public to remain vigilant. Police are on high alert following the recent van attack in Barcelona and similar assaults in London.
There will be an increased police presence on streets in London today, including at the Notting Hill Carnival.
