Grenfell fire crew kit plea turned down

- BY BEN ROSSINGTON

A PLEA for life-saving gear by fire crews who tackled the Grenfell blaze has been rejected by Government.

London Fire Brigade requested £6million of new kit following an internal review days after the blaze.

They included taller ladders and longer-life breathing equipment.

Yet despite saying Government was “committed to meeting the needs of those who responded to the incident”, Home Secretary Amber Rudd said the cash must be found locally.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s office said: “It fails to acknowledge hundreds of millions of pounds of cuts to our spending power.”

Dany Cotton, London fire chief, said: “My main concern is getting the kit. I’m less concerned where the money comes from.” TEACHERS certainly won’t need to worry about telling these twins apart on their first day at secondary school.

The 11-year-olds look strikingly alike but while Marcia has her mother’s light skin and golden-brown hair,

Millie takes after her Jamaican dad.

Mum Amanda Biggs, 46, said: “I’ve explained to the school that despite their differences, they are twins, and hopefully that will help to overcome any awkwardness.

“Other than the differences in skin tone, they look almost exactly the same. They are both absolutely beautiful and they make me proud every day.” Dad Michael, 50, added: “Regardless of the colour difference, people are able to tell they’re twins because their features are so similar.”

The girls, from Highgate, Birmingham, will start at King Solomon International Business School in Aston on Thursday.
