When congratula­ted by the chairman of Oxfordshir­e County Council, Zoe Patrick, he said: “Thank you, it’s very good news … We need Catherine to get over this first bit and then we can start celebratin­g. It’s always a bit anxious to start with.”

France’s Closer magazine was ordered to pay £92,000 in damages to the pair for breaching Kate’s privacy. But the figure was far lower than the £1.5million claimed by lawyers for the royal couple.

The photos were taken as William and Kate stayed at a private chateau in Provence in 2012. Long-lens cameras caught Kate wearing just a pair of bikini bottoms. Another image showed William rubbing suncream on to his wife’s skin.

Six defendants, including the magazine owner and editor, denied the charges.
