Crumbs...second helpings will have you seeing Doctor

-

Although Channel 4’s bosses were delighted by The Great British Bake Off’s opening week success they could still live to regret adding that extra fifteen minutes for ad break dough.

No matter how exciting it is to find out which amateur baker’s (surprisingly professional-looking) creation has won star prize, if there’s something unmissable elsewhere at 9pm viewers are bound to flick over.

I know technology allows us to record and catch up, but most viewers remain creatures of habit. Plus, BBC1’S

is not the sort of person you keep waiting.

It wasn’t long before her patience was tested when the show returned last night. The action had moved on two years and we joined it as Gemma’s (Suranne Jones) cheating husband Simon (Bertie Carvel) returned to Parminster with his now wife Kate (Jodie Comer) and baby and his ever slappable resting smug face.

Despite Simon’s hope that a two year break was long enough for Gemma to recover from their divorce, it soon became clear that she was anything but over him or it.

It also became clear that this second series is going to be just as gripping as the first. Every scene felt like it should have been accompanied by the screeching violin from Psycho, not least that simmering bedroom confrontation between Gemma and Simon where you didn’t know whether she was about to sh*g his brains out or bash them in. Or both.

I know it might prove a little OTT for some viewers but for me Doctor Foster is almost as much of a thrill ride as Line Of Duty.

I’ll be hopping aboard at 9pm sharp every Tuesday for the next four weeks.

The cake can wait.
