WINCE JANSSEN

Poch gets tough with Dutch flop after deadline day snub and will now freeze him out

-

VINCENT JANSSEN is finished at Tottenham after the £17million striker refused to leave on deadline day.

Following a poor debut season, the 23-year-old Dutchman is not seen by boss Mauricio Pochettino as good enough to compete with, or deputise for, Harry Kane.

Janssen has been left out of Spurs’ Champions League squad and, after the arrival of £14m Fernando Llorente from Swansea, he is set to be frozen out of the first-team picture.

Having been stung by their bid to keep faith with flop Roberto Soldado, Tottenham want to cut their losses early with Janssen and not persevere again with a player, who, they feel, is not up to the job.

Spurs made it clear to rivals during the summer that they would listen to offers for Janssen.

But when West Brom and Stoke tried to buy him and Brighton tried to loan him on deadline day, the ex-az Alkmaar striker refused to go. Even after Llorente’s arrival, Janssen maintained he did not want to leave a “top club”.

It led to Spurs chairman Daniel Levy warning the marksman that the club were ready to freeze him out if he did not go. Janssen remained unrepentant, which left Levy furious, the clubs chasing him frustrated and

Pochettino (above) unimpressed.

He is now set to be left out of the weekend trip to Everton after being made perfectly aware of where he stands.

Soldado was Spurs’ most expensive signing when he joined the club from Valencia for £26m in August 2013.

The then-spain international managed just 16 goals in 76 appearances during his two seasons at White Hart Lane, before being sold to Villarreal.

Janssen smashed 27 league goals in the Dutch top flight before signing for Spurs, 14 months ago. But he has also failed to live up to expectations, with just six goals in 39 appearances.

In the Champions League, Spurs face Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and APOEL, in Group H, and Llorente and Son Heungmin will provide cover for Kane.

Janssen was named in Tottenham’s Premier League squad, but he is not expected to feature and could be forced to rely on the League Cup to get a game.
