Capri set to go into overdrive

- BY DAVID YATES

AIDAN O’BRIEN rates Capri “a very solid” candidate to end his run of ill luck in Saturday’s William Hill St Leger. Two years ago, Ballydoyle challenger Bondi Beach was awarded the race by the Doncaster stewards, only to have it taken away on appeal. And last year Idaho went off the 4-6 favourite for the oldest Classic, only to stumble and unseat Seamie Heffernan three furlongs from the finish. Capri stepped forward from a sixth in the Derby to lift the Irish equivalent by a neck from Cracksman in July, and O’brien said yesterday: “He’s class. “He’s a strong traveller, but he finds plenty and keeps going under pressure. He’s a very solid horse.” Capri, the sponsor’s 4-1 second favourite, has yet to race beyond a mile and a half. But O’brien, who will also saddle Venice Beach and Douglas Macarthur in his quest for a fifth St Leger triumph, added: “We always thought he would stay further.” William Hill’s St Leger betting: 3 Crystal Ocean, 4 Capri, 9-2 Defoe, 13-2 bar.
