squad with his own players, the likes of Mcdaid, John Mcguigan, James Knowles and Tiernan Mcnicholl. Fans and commentators alike have noticed a much more fluid, attractive style of football so far in the new campaign, while on the results front the early signs have been encouraging, with Saturday’s harsh defeat to the Blues their only loss to date.

And while Mcdaid feels Linfield were lucky to earn the Big Two bragging rights, he reckons it’s indicative of the progress being made that the Oval men were superior in a derby for the first time in a while.

“Obviously not getting the result was a bit of a kick in the teeth, especially after dominating the game,” said Mcdaid.

“Whenever they got their goal, they set their stall out and were hard to break down but we had chances to win the game and I feel if Roy Carroll isn’t in goals, then we win that game.

“I think everyone coming away from the game, both Linfield fans and Glentoran fans, realised we were the stronger team, and it’s probably been a long time since Glentoran have been the better side in a ‘Bel Classico’ game, but in saying that obviously Linfield still won the game 1-0 and that’s the fine margins.

“But in terms of league position, obviously Glentoran are used to finishing up around the top of the table, but for us, as cliched as it sounds, we are just taking it one game at a time and if we can get three points every Saturday, the rest will take care of itself.

“We haven’t really set ourselves any main targets.

“Of course we have an idea of where we want to be, but in terms of what we are trying to do, it’s just concentrating on the next game and Ballymena next week.”
