Scramble on to grab the first new £10 notes

GET rich quick hopefuls were asking £900 for the new Jane Austen £10 note within hours of them being issued.

Queues snaked around London’s iconic Bank of England building from 1am in the scramble to swap tatty old paper tenners for the slick plastic “forgery proof ” notes.

Launched to mark 200 years since the Pride and Prejudice author’s death, fanatics were on the hunt for numbers relevant to her life, LOUISE Redknapp pops out still wearing her wedding ring despite her reported marriage troubles.

The mum-of-two, 42, wed to Jamie, 44, for 19 years, grabbed a takeaway with pal Will Young in West London.

The duo, who met on Strictly, are preparing for a new theatre tour of Cabaret, which starts its run in Wimbledon next week. Bling it on... including her date of birth 16 121775. One collector beamed: “I queued to get the new £5 note as well. I enjoy the thrill of getting a brand new note before anyone else.”

One billion have been printed and will be circulated over coming months. The old paper

£10 will be withdrawn next spring. The new note features a hologram with the word “ten” which changes to “pounds”, plus a quill which turns orange from purple.

But vegans are furious over the decision to keep traces of tallow animal fat in the notes.

Staff at The Vegan Hippo cafe in Soho, Central London, insisted: “We won’t accept the £10 note, it’s against our values.”

Next for a revamp is the £20 which will feature artist JMW Turner, due out in 2020.
