Time for Bicep to flex their muscles

Belfast production duo going global... album shows why New venue Shines for dance music

-

This 2013 breakthrough is pure 90s piano house bliss. Trippy house from a Belfast producer on warm up duties at the

Bicep album launch. Proper, jangly indie-rock that’s frantic and catchy. Full disclaimer - I’m employed by the company behind the venture – but I think it’s fair to say The Telegraph Building transforming into a venue, albeit temporarily, is great news for fans of live music and clubbing in the city.

House and techno works best in this type of setting - the likes of Fabric in London and the Warehouse Project in Manchester benefit from the industrial feel of their surroundings.

With The Mandela Hall set to be replaced by a new student centre at Queens, it’s great that clubbing institution Shine has found itself the perfect new home, albeit temporarily (The Telegraph Building will eventually be totally refurbished).

There’ll be much more than dance music however - with a mess of live gigs planned for what’s a huge open space (with regards to capacity think Ulster Hall) and some other events beside. The first club night is hosted by Shine on September 30. Given everyone seems to be talking about IT, I might as well through in my two cents. I don’t understand the hype, certainly in the context of it being this unbearable horror. It didn’t make me jump and was nowhere near as creepy as I expected from reading reviews. I think horror films suffer from us knowing too much about their creation

– and seeing way too many clips and teases in advance of actually heading to the cinema. Previously, you’d only have the movie-poster to go on – perhaps a short trailer – and maybe some rumours about actors freaking out and/or dying on set. Some mystique, basically. Now we know, and have discussed, every minute detail and are too well prepared. Or maybe - as my wife suggests - I just don’t have enough of an imagination to appreciate and get freaked out by this type of movie. Either way, I thought the clown was really, really cool...
