A Much-loved journalist who last year saved his cousin’s life with the gift of a kidney has tragically died aged 53.

Raymond Hughes worked as a senior subeditor for the Daily Mirror for six years before going on to edit the Ulster Gazette.

More recently he had worked as a freelance subeditor for RE&D NI and had set up a news site dedicated to stories surrounding Lough Neagh.

Raymond was originally from Coalisland, Co Tyrone, but lived in Belfast.

Earlier this month he told the Daily Mirror how donating a kidney had turned his life around and encouraged others to follow in his footsteps on National Transplant Week.

Although he suffered from epilepsy, Raymond said he had been given a clean bill of health after a full MOT before the operation.

SHOCKED

It is understood he was discovered dead at his home yesterday – and that he died of natural causes.

A spokeswoman for the Daily Mirror said: “All the staff in the Belfast office are shocked and very saddened to hear of Raymond’s sudden passing.

“Raymond was a great character and is fondly remembered by his former colleagues, particularly those on the subs bench who worked most closely with him.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family at this very sad time.”

Last night friends took to social media to pay their respects.

One wrote: “I’m just gutted Raymond Hughes – only spoke with you a few days ago – can’t take this in RIP wee buddy.”

Another added: “Sad news once again touches the town of Coalisland.

“A true gentleman and well known man throughout the country.”
