A TEENAGE schoolgirl has been left with serious injuries after she fell from a moving bus on to the road after a window collapsed.

Aiobheann Mcbrien was travelling to St Kevin’s College in Lisnaskea, Co Fermanagh, when suddenly the window beside her collapsed and she was propelled on to the road.

She was discovered by principal Gary Kelly who was travelling on another bus as they returned from Mass.

The 16-year-old was taken to South West Acute Hospital following the September 11 incident in which she received 17 stitches in her ear, staples in her head, cuts, bruising and left with pain throughout her body.

Her mum Nuala Mcbrien says she’s recovering well but is in a lot of pain.

She told the BBC: “She was at the doctor’s yesterday and they could only remove seven of her stitches, as the rest aren’t healed up enough.

“Hopefully they will come out in her next

doctor’s appointment. She had staples in her head and she has them all removed.

“Her back and body are still very, very, sore. Her face is all cut and grazed but they are healing up and thank God all her wounds will heal.

“But she’s been lucky.” Mrs Mcbrien said they were very concerned that such a thing could happen, particularly on a school bus. She added: “There should be bars or something on the inside of the bus. It shouldn’t have happened and it is a miracle she came off so well.”

Mr Kelly told Fermanagh Herald they had hired the Education Authority buses for safety reasons as they didn’t want to walk through the busy town.

He said: “We are very lucky that we do not have a fatality, or a serious head or spinal injury on our hands.”

In a statement to the BBC, the Education Authority said it was investigating the circumstances of the incident, but that it would be “inappropriate to comment further at this stage”.
